What Self Sustainability Means To Me
Self-sustainability is defined as: the degree at which a system can sustain itself without external support. This concept can apply to many aspects of your life. Some examples include creating a business that supports your lifestyle, incorporating solar power to help provide for your energy needs, capturing rain water, or growing your own produce and/or meat. You may have an interest in one or all of these. For me the area in which I most focus on is growing food for my family.
I grew up in a home where TV dinners where the norm and virtually the only veggies served were corn and potatoes. When I moved out on my own I knew that I didn't want those types of eating habits and the evolution began. Slowly educating myself on a balanced diet lead to learning to cook, which lead to a desire to knowing where my food came from. Fast forward a decade and we now have a small farm just outside of Austin where we raise our own cattle, goats, rabbits, and chickens. We also have a small garden and a pond that we are planning on raising fish in.
We are at the point where all the meat that our family would typically have bought in the grocery store we raise here. It has taken years to get to this point and countless hours of labor, but for my family knowing that the food on our table was raised organically and with love provides peace of mind that makes it worth it. We love the lifestyle and living in central Texas provides a great climate for growing our own food.
Central Texas has an ideal climate for agriculture. We are a top producer of cotton, hay, sheep, goats, mohair and horses. Some of the state's top crops are vegetables, citrus, corn, wheat, peanuts, pecans, sorghum and rice. There are even varieties of bananas that thrive here! I mention all this to point out that there is really no shortage in the variety of things that we can grow here. If your family has interest in living a more sustainable lifestyle then they are bound to appreciate all that this area has to offer. Couple the climate with a strong economy and the high availability of acreage and you can see the draw that the greater Austin area has for folks with sustainability in mind.
